Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto kicks off the construction of the much-anticipated Medan-Kuala Namu-Tebing Tinggi toll road project in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra on Tuesday.

Djoko said that the toll road was part of a larger plan to construct the Trans-Sumatra toll road, which would span the entire island of Sumatra from Aceh to Lampung.

The Medan-Kuala Namu-Tebing Tinggi road would have a crucial role in channeling economic growth from the Kuala Namu International Airport, as well as from North Sumatra’s economy.

“The toll road is part of the ministry’s plan to support the Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of the Indonesian Economy (MP3EI) program through improving the road connectivity in Sumatra,” he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

The toll road project will be managed by state-owned toll operator PT Jasa Marga, construction firm PT Waskita Karya, housing company PT Pembangunan Perumahan and contractor PT Hutama Karya.

At present, the land acquisition process for the construction of the toll road’s first section has reached 81.32 percent and acquisition for the second section is already at 81.40 percent.

The first 17.8-kilometer section would connect Medan, Perbarakan and Kuala Namu while the second 44-kilometer section would link Perbarakan and Tebing Tinggi.

“We aim for the first section to be finished by 2016, while the second one should be completed by 2017,” he said.
